| A mid Meiji pair of mirror image Hirado candlesticks molded like two small children (karako). Each boy is holding a spray of large leaves with finely detailed multi petal flowers. All of the underglaze blue is in the classic Hirado blue. The two sticks measure 6 1/1" high by 3 1/4" wide by 2 1/2" deep. Both are in excellent condition - there are very minor chips to a couple of the petals on both flowers. We date this pair to the mid Meiji period, circa 1875-1895. Louis Lawrence, in his book "Hirado, Prince of Porcelain", accurately summed up why this Japanese porcelain is widely regarded as the finest to ever come out of Japan -it is a true world class ceramic made of the finest clay from Amakusa Island. Hirado is characterized by the extreme smoothness of the clay and its ability to adapt to very unusual shapes because of its malleability and resistance to running in the firing process. | |||||||||||||
