A Pr of Japanese Nabeshima Celadon Bowl/Dishes – Edo
This is a very rare pair of Nabeshima bowl/dishes in a pure celadon glaze. They are round with four notches in the edges. Each measures 5 1/3" diameter and is 1 1/2" high to the rim. Each has a spur mark from the kiln on the base and both are in excellent condition. They date from the 18th century, Edo period. Extracts from a pale-green stone (Celadon) produces a glaze, which in turn produces an elegant pale-green color. The result is a fired product with a mysterious blue-green color. The Nabeshima kilns were established in Iwayakawachi in Arita in 1628 and moved to Okawachiyama in Imari City in 1675, and exclusively fired pieces for the domain's use, for gifts to be presented to the shogunate and other feudal lords. In the official domain kilns only the potters with the highest techniques taken from among those in Arita were engaged in the production of elaborately designed overglaze enamel wares, underglaze cobalt-blue wares, and celadon wares under strict control, and which are named "Nabeshima". The celadon wares were admired as "Nabeshima celadon", which is a combination of the time-honored underglaze cobalt blue and celadon techniques. At the Nabeshima domain's official kiln in Hizen Province (Saga Prefecture), great effort was made to produce a very refined porcelain for use by the domain warrior class and for presentation to the central government and daimyo of other domains.
