A Chinese Blanc de Chine (Dehua )Elephant - 18th Cty
A rare Chinese Blanc de Chine (Dehua) porcelain figure of an elephant with a jar on its back. In the standard reference book - "Blanc de Chine", P.J. Donnelly, Faber & Faber, 1969; Donnelly states on p.183-4 that "The blanc de Chine elephants recorded all belong to the 18th century. - - Those elephants bearing vases are probably later than the others, for they were matched at Chingtenchen by similar models in the late famille rose enamels. The elephant standing alone seems to be the rarest of the forms today." Four examples of these elephants are shown in Plate 110 of Donnelly - to photos of which are included herein. This elephant is one of the large ones as it measures 7 1/2" high by 7" long and is 4 3/4" deep. Excellent condition - one semi-circular kiln flaw on the back or the hanging blanket - no chips or restorations.
