| A Japanese wood and lacquer travel shrine -Zushi - with unusual quarter panel doors. Inside the shrine is a bearded Buddhist priest with a peaked hat. The figure measures 1 3/4" high by 2 1/2" wide by 1 1/4" deep. He sits on raised throne or pedestal. The detailed carving of his face is excellent - traces of red color and gold painted highlights. His left hand is missing - otherwise in very good condition. Overall the shrine measures 4 3/8" high by 3 1/3" wide by 2" deep. With the quarter panel doors open the shrine is 4 5/6" wide. We date the zushi to to the late Edo to early Meiji period, circa 1850-1880. | ||||||||||
