Japanese Studio Vase by Makuzu Kozan - Meiji
A superb small studio vase by the Master Potter, Makuzu Kozan. This vase demonstrates the incredible mastery of Kozan in control of glazes - fading from a darker pink rim - to a paler color pink at the shoulder of the vase - then back to the darker pink at the waist - then down to an almost pure white at the base - and ending up in the light pink at the bottom. No further decorations - and none needed as this is a rare example of Kozan's techniques and is beautiful in its simplicity. The vase measures 4 5/8" high by 1 5/8" diameter at the mouth by 3" diameter at the waist and the footed base is 2" diameter. The six character signature on the base reads "Makuzu-gama Kozan sei" - made by Makuzu Kozan. An example of an almost identical signature can be found on Plate 15, p.40 of the reference book "Bridging East and West -Japanese Ceramics from the Kozan Studio", Perry Collection at the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford and the Walters Art Gallery, Baltimore, Washington Press, 1994. The vase is in mint condition with no chips, cracks or restorations. It dates from the Meiji period, circa 1850-1900. Miyagawa (Makuzu) Kozan (1842-1916) was appointed artist to the Japanese Imperial household and is considered to be one of the greatest potters of the Meiji Era. He came from a long line of potters based in Kyoto an took over the family business in 1860, at the age of nineteen, In 1870 he opened a workshop in Yokohama arrived at his artistic height during the 1880’s.
