| A polychrome wooden figure of the Goddess of Mercy and Compassion - Kwanyin (Guanyin) - dating from the late Ming dynasty circa 1550-1625. She is shown seated in the posture known as Royal Repose with her right leg raised and resting on a rocky ledge and her right arm resting on her right knee - the right hand is missing. The left leg rests on a lower ledge of the rock and her left hand on a higher ledge. There are extensive remnants of the original gesso and overpaint - mainly in reds, greens and blues - the majority of the painted gesso has worn off over the years - yet the colors to her face and crown are quite well preserved. The carving measures 13 1/2" high by 7 1/2" wide by 5 1/4" deep. A beautiful and expressive countenance give this early piece a serenity that still stands through the centuries. A surprising amount of the draperied costume still remain despite their fragility. | |||||||||||||
