African Mask – BaPende Tribe – Mid 20th Century
A classic Mbuya mask used in ceremonies following initiation of men into the tribe. The mask represents an important person in the BaPende Society and is used to control supernatural powers. The person being initiated may be required to wear a miniature copy of the mask, usually in ivory, as a pendant. Dates from the mid 20th century. Measures 16" long by 8" wide by 6" deep. Excellent condition.
