| The very fine covered jar is round box is typical of the ceramics made in Kyoto from the beginning of the Edo period at the end of the 17th century onwards. The bowl and its domed lid are decorated in overglaze enamels on a tannish white crackle finish base. There are four designs of floral patterns on both the lid and the body of the piece. At the base of the body there are vertical blue stripes reminiscent of Nabeshima foot rims. The top has been broken many years ago and expertly repaired with the traditional gold lacquer repairs. The inside is the simple tan crackle glaze and the base is unglazed. There is a label on the underside of the lid that reads “Cover with gold lacquer repair – provenance Brooklyn Museum”. It is part of a number of de-accessioned items from the Brooklyn Museum that we purchased some 10-12 years ago. We date it to the late Edo period, circa 1775-1850. Excellent condition with the exception of the lacquer repair. It measures 4 1/4" high to the top of the dome and the body is 5" in diameter. There is a single mark on the top that has been translated as One word from Qianlong's "Long" - in Japanese it reads Ryu | |||||||||||||
