| A very fine Gandharan head of the BUDDHA done in stucco- 6" tall x 4" wide x 5' deep (Not including the custom stand). Heavy encrustation on the back, apparently from where the piece was pried off the stupa on which it was located. This fine example of Gandharan art was obtained from one of the top antiquities dealers on the East Coast. As such, I fully believe in the authenticity of the 4th century dating. Comes from the Gandharan Empire in the northern area of India where Greco/Roman sculptural influence was married to Buddhist iconology in starting in the 2nd century AD. | |||||||
