| This is one of the most unusual Japanese ceramic pieces we have ever had in the collection or seen anywhere else. It is a porcelain piece shaped in the form of a pulley wheel for a well. The body is white and the sides and handles are decorated in overglaze enamel in a profusion of multi-colored spider chrysanthemums. The center of the pulley wheel at the axis point is painted with gold. The wheel does not revolve as it is fixed in place. The piece measures 7" high - the wheel is 5" diameter and the width is 3 3/4" wide at the edges of the two handles. Excellent condition. We date it to the early Showa period - however, it could be as early as late Meiji to Taisho periods. | |||||||||||
