A Meiji Brown Glazed Bowl with 5 Imperial (kiku) Mums
This is a Japanese karatsu bowl with a thick dark chocolate brown glaze that extends all the way to the foot of the bowl. On the interior there are three sixteen petal Imperial mums (kiku) and on the side there are two more. The kiku are in a light tan underglaze.

The Bowl measures 8” diameter at the top, is 3 /14’ high and the unglazed base is 3 ½” diameter. Excellent condition – one firing flaw on the upper rim and two small firing cracks in the rim of the foot. We believe the bowl dates from the mid Meiji period, circa 1880-1895.

The Kiku is the Imperial Seal of Japan and is called "Kiku No Gomon" which, literally, means "Noble Symbol of Chrysanthemum" or "Imperial Seal of Chrysanthemum". The Imperial Seal is used by members of the Japanese Imperial family. As of 2005, there is no law that specifies what is the National Seal of Japan. As a custom, the Imperial Seal is treated as if it were the National Seal. It is the Imperial Seal of Japan and is called "Kiku No Gomon" which, literally, means "Noble Symbol of Chrysanthemum" or "Imperial Seal of Chrysanthemum". The number five holds tremendous significance in nearly all Buddhist traditions. In Japan sets of any thing such as chawan, etc are nearly always found in sets of five as they have a superstition that the odd numbers are better than the even. Some have explained that the tradition is to always have a spare setting for a guest should one arrive.
