| A Mingei (folk art) wooden figure (okimono) of a seated priest or scholar seated on a rock. Ittobori is a uniquely Japanese carving technique. The name literally means "one chisel cut". You can see by the angles made by the chisel that they are not smoothed out. The carving is excellent and has fine old patina. The scholar is is on a rock base which is carved separately from the figure itself. We cannot identify the wood other that to note that it is carved from two separate blocks of wood which have then been stained a dark color and polished to a sheen from usage or at the time of its making. The okimono is in good condition the tip of the mans headdress has been broken off at some point and re-glued. There is a small repaired chip to the base of the rock seat. Even such details as his pensive face, his garment and even his high geta are well executed in the carving. (Geta are a form of Japanese footwear that resembles both clogs and flip-flops. In this style, the geta have an elevated wooden base and are worn in rain or snow to keep the feet dry, due to their extra height and impermeability. The piece measures 8 ½ high by 6 Ό wide by 5 deep. We date it to the late Meiji period, circa 1890-1910. | |||||||||||||
