A detailed Chinese bronze censer with an elaborate incised scene on the entire outside of the body. On one side we find an armored warrior fighting with an attacking tiger. On the other side we find another warrior doing battle with a dragon. The whole scene has many other details such as clouds, branches of plum blossoms and bamboo leavers. There are two beautifully executed lion mask handles. On the base – under the raised foot ring – there is a six character mark that is the reign mark of Emperor Xuande, 1426-1435. It is possible that the censer is both mark and period. However, it is more likely that it dates from the 18th to early 19th century. It is in generally good condition. There is a 6-7" crack on the side of the censer that was very well repaired from the inside many years ago - it takes a magnifying glass to see it. There is also some verdigris in the incised design and on the base. It would appear that sometime in the past that the censer was polished. The censer measures 5 ¾” diameter and is 3” high. It weighs 2 1/4 pounds.
