| This is a lovely pottery waterdropper as used by scholars to apply small amounts of water to the solidified ink stones when doing calligraphy. Great shape of a classic double gourd with dark green leaf leaning against a small cup. I believe this piece dates from the mid 19th century. What has me puzzled is the exact pottery style - it appears to be Chinese Yixing purple clay ware - but could equally be Japanese Banko ware of the period. Whichever, it is a delightful example of the potters craft in turning a simple object into an elegant form and utilitarian piece. Measures 3 1/4" wide x 2 1/8" deep x 2 1/2" high - excellent condition - part of an old sticker still on it but faded and not readable. | ||||||||
