| A nice little Qingbai globular shaped jarlet measuring 2 ¼” by 2 ¼”. The piece has been dated as the Song dynasty (960-1270)– however we will be conservative and attribute a date of 18th/19th century as so many later reproductions were made. It is in excellent condition. Qingbai wares were made at Jingdezhen and at many other southern kilns from the time of the Northern Song Dynasty until they were eclipsed in the 14th century by underglaze-decorated blue and white wares. Qingbai in Chinese literally means "clear white". The qingbai glaze is a porcelain glaze, so-called because it was made using porcelain stone. The qingbai glaze is clear the light blue color but comes from iron impurities in the glaze. The special characteristic comes from the body, which is natural porcelain clay, and its glaze, which is made by diluting in water the porcelain body material mixed with lime. When applied over a white porcelain body the glaze produces a greenish-blue color that gives the glaze its name (qingbai in Chinese means greenish-blue). Some have incised or moulded decorations. In recent yeas some antique dealer's use the name Yingqing (Shadow Blue). | |||||||
