| At the turn of the 20th century - late Meiji to very early Showa period - there was a department store in Boston named Vantines or Vanteens. The store had a large trade in items from the Far East - particularly Japan - as a result of the craze for the Gilbert and Sullivan operetta "The Mikado" and the opera "Madame Butterfly". This bronze alloy incense burner - koro - was molded in the shape of a samurai's helmet. It is in good condition with tell-tail smoke on the inside that indicates it was used. We date it to approximately 1900-1930. | |||||||
