A very pretty Japanese cloisonne vase done in the gin bari technique. The base color is silver “fish scale” gin bari tapering to a light green at the top. One side of the vase has many green leaves – a beautiful large. light red spider mum – and two blue daisy like smaller flowers. The other side is not decorated other than with the silver gin bari. The vase measures 6” high and is 3” diameter at the shoulder. It is in excellent condition with none of the hairline cracks or chips so often seen in gin bari pieces. We date it to the mid to late Meiji period, circa 1880-1900. Although the vase is not signed, it quite possibly the work of Kodenji or Teitaro as the style is very much in their styles. The previous owner – a highly knowledgeable dealer in Asian art – attributed in to Kodenji – but we have no provenance to prove this assertion. |
