| This is a remarkable Japanese bronze/copper alloy figure of a seated tiger with a ferocious countenance. The piece is quite large and – although it is hollow – is quite heavy. The detail work on the casting is superb – the stripes, the fierce snarling expression with teeth bared, the long tail curled back over the right leg – every aspect of the animal is executed in precise detail. The tiger measures 15” long by 12” high by 8” wide and is in superb condition. We date it to the early Meiji period, circa 1870-1890s. It comes with a black wooden stand – not pictured – that is a long flat surface with scroll shaped end legs – the stand measures 20” long by 11 ½” wide by 1 ¼” high. We purchased this magnificent tiger many years ago from a first rate dealer in Japanese antiques and consider it to be of true museum quality. | |||||||||||||||
