A very vividly painted Kutani dish in a hexagonal shape with vertical sides. The dish is decorated in over the glaze enamels in the traditional Kutani colors of green, brownish purple, red, blue and yellow. The design is of a fisherman in a partly covered boat that is floating near the shoreline. In the distance is an island - or part of the mainland - with a house surrounded by stylized trees. There is a pair of Kanji characters on the top left of the front that we have not had translated. On the bottom of the dish is pure white glaze and in the middle of the foot is a four character mark set inside of a reserve - here again we have not been able to get it translated. The dish is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks or restorations. We date it to the late Meiji to early Showa period, circa 1915-1930s. |
