This is a very nice Satsuma plate dating from the late Meiji period, circa 1885-1910. The design is that of large white Japanese crane in flight over a garden full of a variety of flowers. The design is a thick overglaze enamel – particularly so for the crane - over the traditional tan crackled ground of Satsuma. There is a clump of grass at the bottom of the garden and the entire rim has a design of a band triangles in green and red that nicely frame the main design. The plate measures 8 ½” diameter and is 1 1/8” deep. The back of the dish is not decorated – just the tan crackle glaze. There is a signature in the lower right hand side of the upper side of the dish. The translation of this Satsuma mark is "Yasuda-Zo" (Yasuda Made). Yasuda is a Satsuma maker who also managed Kinkozan as well. The plate is in very good condition. |
