A brightly painted Nara Itto-bori doll of a Noh Dancer in full costume. It comes in its original box and is in excellent condition. The box has two sets of Kanji characters. The first set translates as "Gyosen" and the second set translates as "Nara Ningyo(doll)" – two of the other characters were too illegible to translate. The doll measures 6” high and is 3” wide by 3” deep. The technique used for this carving is know as itto-bori. It was carved using a technique called "itto-bori" (one knife carving) or "to no kiri" (sword cut carving). Such carvings are cut in sharp, angular planes and painted in strong, pure matte colors. We date this carving piece to the Meiji period, circa 1890-1910. |
