This is a late Taisho to Early Showa (1925-1940) Satsuma vase with a particularly lovely detailed landscape scene. On one side we find a group of court ladies strolling on the steps and at the base of a large temple with a pagoda and a waterfall in the background. On the other side is a lovely landscape scene of meandering streams coming down from the mountains with a cherry tree in full blossom - definitely a Spring scene. The upper rim has a band of stylized flowers and then a narrower band of geometric design. On the base is a signature with a three character mark of the pottery painter and the circled cross of Satsuma. The vase is in excellent condition with no cracks or chips – we date it to about 1930-1950 – possibly a bit earlier. The vase measures 6 1/2” high and is 3 ½” diameter at its widest. |
