This is an interesting and unusual pair of ribbon slides made of cherrybark. Cherrybark work has a history of over 1000 years in Japan, and remains one of the most exquisite handcrafts coming from the Akita Prefecture. One of the slides has a design of gourds with leaves and vines on one side – and the plain textured cherrybark on the other side. The second slide has a design carved in low relief of two flower blossoms and their leaves - and the same plain textured cherrybark on the reverse. The grain of the cherrybark is beautiful. The slides each measure 2” long by 1 ½” wide by 3/16” thick. Both are in excellent condition – we date them to the late Taisho to early Showa period, circa 1925-1940. They would make a lovely adornment for a ladies ribbon in her hair. |
