This is a nice medium sized silk Fukusa with a design of a long scroll painted with pine trees. The scroll is surrounded by a profusion of chrysanthemums on all sides. Just above the scroll is a painting of Mt. Fuji in the distance with a crane flying by. The painting is executed in paint on pale gold silk. On the back is another piece of same sized silk in a bright red and bearing a the Pawlownia mon (crest) which is reserved for the Imperial court. The two pieces of cloth are loosely stitched together with a thick green silk thread that frames the painting on the front and the four corners have tassels of green and gold.
The fukusa measures 13” by 16” and is in excellent condition. We date it to the early Showa period, circa 1930-1945 – could possibly be earlier. Fukusa are pieces of decorated silk used to cover gifts in the Japanese tradition. They should not be confused with furoshiki, which are much more modest cotton cloths used for wrapping and carrying. It is customary for the recipient of the gift to return the Fukusa to the giver. (Although I have heard it said that if the recipient of the gift were a daimyo, shogun or high official, they often kept the fukusa as well as the gift). |
