This is a Japanese handled bronze mirror (e-kagami) with an impressed design of several cranes flying around pine trees and a stream. There are two large Kanji characters in the middle and a long inscription in Kanji - neither of which had translated. These mirrors were often used as wedding gifts. The mirror is 7 ½” diameter and - with the handle – measures 10 1/8” long – it is 1/8” thick. We date the mirror to the late Meiji to Taisho period, 1900-1925/ It is in excellent condition. In Japan, mirrors made of bronze (copper mixed with tin and lead) were used until the Edo period (1615-1868. We think this one was made earlier; however, it could well be much older. These mirrors had a design on the back side, while the front was gilt with tin and beautifully polished to create a reflective surface. You can still see your face in some of these early bronze mirrors even now. Japanese bronze mirrors have a history of nearly two thousand years, starting in the Yayoi period (300 B.C. to A.D. 250). |
