A Japanese Black Lacquer Pen Box - Showa
This is a nice simple Japanese lacquer pen and paper box from the 1930s -1950s, Showa period. The box is done in the dark black lacquer known as "roiro" and has two floral arrangements on the covering lid done in gold lacquer and some areas of nashiji(pear skin) gold. There is a plain black 1/4" thick piece that fits inside - probably to provide a lower section where paper would be stored and an upper section for the pens. We date the box to the mid Showa era. It is in generally good condition - a couple of tiny dings on the top and a few expected light scratches on the bottom from use.
