Here we offer a black and white Japanese woodblock print with two different subjects. On the left we have a picture of a large wandering priest who wears a basket shaped straw hat on his head. He is looking down towards a samurai seated on the ground. Hard to figure why the priest has such a malevolent look – maybe the samurai threatened him unless he removed the basket hat. The kanji characters on the print have been translated as - "Temosoukuwaiden" (The story of Temosou) - Temosou is type of priest with straw hat, also called "Komuso" in modern era. The print on the right is of a geisha departing for her evening engagement in full regalia – behind her can be seen other aspects of the geisha establishment with servants and other geisha in the background. The kanji characters on this one have been translated as "Sudo Gonnosuke". We do not know if that is the artist’s name or a title of the picture. The two prints are framed in a metal frame and are in excellent condition. Both prints have excellent registration. The pair measure 9 ¼” high by 18 ¼” wide in the frame. The individual print images are 7 ¼” by 5 ¾”. We date the diptych to the late Meiji period, circa 1890-1910. |
