This is a Japanese diptych woodblock print by Bairei,Kono(1844-1895). The print depicts two deer done in blacks and grays they are seen standing under a flowering cherry tree next to a brook being fed by a small waterfall. The print has areas of light rose pink to highlight the water and the sky in the distance. It is in very good condition with light wrinkles and is a protected by a clear plastic wrap over the rose tan silk covered mounting mat paperboard. The print has a three-character mark at the lower right translated as Made by Barei. The diptych measures 11 ½ wide by 7 ½ tall the fully matted diptych measures 16 wide by 12 high. We date the print to the early Meiji period, circa 1870-1880s. Bairei was a pupil in Kyoto of the Maruyama-Shijo painter Raisho; then, at 27, of the Shijo-school artist Bunin. The Shijo school, also called Maruyama school, was a Japanese school of naturalistic painting that was founded in the late 18th century by Maruyama Masataka and was revived for woodblock prints during the Meiji by Bairei. |
