This cast iron tetsubin has a pattern known variously as “black hobnail” – “Hail” and “Arare”. Most of the sides of the pot have this raised dot pattern and a band of the dots is also on the lid. The handle – which we think is bronze rather than iron – swings freely. The piece measures 5 1’4’ tall with the handle fully raised. The lid has a tiny pine cone as a finial. The lid is 3” diameter, the body is 4” diameter at its widest – exclusive of the spout – and the height of the pot exclusive of the handle is 2 7/8”. We date it to the Taisho to early Showa period, circa 1925-1940. It is in excellent condition with nice patina. Tetsubin are Japanese cast iron pots having pouring spout and handle crossing over the top, used for boiling and pouring hot water for drinking purposes, such as for making tea. Because iron is released into the water, the water is appreciated as a dietary source of iron. Tetsubin traditionally are heated over a charcoal fire. |
