This is a lovely intaglio casting in bronze of the Goddess of Mercy, Kwan Yin.
The figure is cast in great detail - notice the robes, the necklace , the lotus stand and the facial expression is on of compassion. The casting is 7” by 3 ¾” – the wooden frame is 10” by 4 ¾”. We date the bronze to the early Qing Period, 1650-1800. It is in excellent condition with superb patina – quite a few areas, particularly in the folds – have verdi gris patina. The Kwan Yin is portrayed in a standing position facing straight forward. Her right hand is in the abhaya mudra, the gesture of discussion and debate which indicates communication and the explanation of the Dharma. The tip of the thumb and index finger touch, this being the gesture of great compassion. Kwan Yin (also spelled Kuan Yin or Quan Yin), is known as the Goddess of Compassion, and she is one of the most popular deities in all of Asia. Her name in Chinese roughly translates to "The One who Hears the Cries of the World". Many believe that she is the female representation of Avalokitesvara, who is the Tibetan and Nepalese God of Compassion. As a bodhisattva, she has chosen to put off her complete unexcelled, perfect enlightenment for the benefit of beings everywhere, and she will wait as long as there is one being who is not enlightened. An intaglio casting is a sculptured artwork where a modeled form is raised, or in sunken-relief lowered, from a flattish background plane without being disconnected from it. It is therefore not free-standing or in the round, but has a background from which the main elements of the composition. |
