| Incredible Large Zitan Brush Pot - decorated over entire surface with highly intricate designed carving of four dragons in the clouds - two are chasing the tamba , sacred pearl - the others facing head on in the classic Imperial Chinese Dragon posture and clutching the tamba in one claw. The dragons claws have five toes - another feature supposedly reserved for the Imperial art. Amazingly, this large brush pot is made from a single block of wood - not with the usual plug in the base found on the majority of Zitan pieces. This is the largest piece of Zitan wood we have ever seen or owned - the brush pot measures a tall 9 1/4" and is 8 7/8" in diameter. Has the gently rounded lip on the upper rim that is characteristic of the earlier pieces. Appears to have a coat of either very thin lacquer or some other dressing to maintain its high gloss appearance. You can see the characteristic hare's fur grain quite clearly in the closeup photos of the rims. The feet appear to have been added and of a different would that was stained the same dark chocolate brown as the stain has worn away from usage. Excellent condition with NO chips, cracks, hairlines or restorations. We date this from the early to mid 19th century. A very important and rare scholars object ! | |||||||||||||||
