We believe this to be a Chinese toggle made of bronze. This one is an elongated shape with the head cast in the form of a dragon's head. It then tapers down to a point and could possibly have been used as a letter opener by the owner. The toggle measures 5" long and is about 3/8" at the widest part of the dragon head. It is in excellent condition with fine old patina. We date the piece to the late Qing period, circa 1850-1890 - however, it could be much earlier. Chinese toggles (Guajian) are the precursors of the Japanese netsuke by many centuries, and acted as counter weights to hang objects from the belt or sash. |
