A Museum Quality Kinkozan Satsuma Chawan – Meiji
This is one of the finest quality Satsuma chawan (tea bowls) that is clearly in the same class as that of Yabu Meizan. The painting on this chawan is extraordinary in every respect. The exterior of the chawan is decorated into seven separate bands - the top band is a black and gold geometric design and the second band is a lovely floral scene of multi colored flowers. The third band is superb: it consists of tiny paintings of karako (Japanese children) engaged in a number of different activities – pulling toys, playing on toy drums, carrying banners, having a tea party, carrying trays and boxes, reading scrolls and books, carrying floral sprays, teasing each other and practicing calligraphy. We have tried to count the number of children and keep coming up with different totals – there are somewhere between 45-48 different children portrayed. Then there is a band of geometric design – another band of floral design – a band of lappets – and, finally, at the base, a repeat of the gold and black geometric design as on the uppermost layer. On the inner side of the bowl is a reserve surrounded by a host of flowers and large geometric patterns. In the center reserve is a scene of three mothers with their five children enjoying a garden. Behind them is a man raking a garden in front of a house. Description continues on next catalog page, item #880595 .
