This is an interesting shell shaped small dish – mukozuke – on tripod legs. The upper side of the dish has a scene in underglaze blue and white of a lake scene with a house on a hill – distant fishing boats and low waves – and trees on hills. There is a row of raised dots on the side of the shell that curls upward. On the base, we find an unusual bark shaped brown glaze. We have seen this color of a few Hirado pieces; and the white glaze on the upper side of the dish could easily the soft Hirado glaze. On the other hand, it is possible that the piece is from the Kutani kilns. We lean towards the Hirado idea. Either way the dish is an unusual piece that would complement any collection of Meiji Japanese ceramics. The dish measures 5” long by 4” wide by 1 ¼” deep and is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks or restorations. We date it to the Meiji period, circa 1880-1890s. |
