| This is an early Kakiemon dish with a sparse design that would appeal to the Japanese preference for wabi, or simplicity, in its design. The center of the dish has the characteristic small design of a small chrysanthemum with five flared stems evenly spaced around the flower. The outer rim is a simple band of stylized flowers in underglaze blue. On the outer rim the bottom of the dish is a band of karakusa vines. There is a single spur mark in the center of the bottom – caused by a small clay sagger that was used to separate the dishes when they were being fired in the kiln. The dish measures 5” diameter by 1 ¼” deep and is in excellent condition with the single exception of a short dark firing flaw on the top. We date the piece to the Edo period, circa 1780s- 1850. | ||||||||
