An Chinese Blue and White Bowl
This is an interesting Chinese blue and white bowl with rather intricate designs in underglaze blue. We are not quite sure of its origin – the previous owner had identified it as Sawankalok – but we have been told by an expert that it is Chinese. The sides of the bowl are decorated in a design that resembles a turtle back with multiple interlocking five sided frames around circles of seven dots. The inside of the bowl has a lovely spare design of a stylized floral spray in the bottom and geometric figures connected with looping dotted lines. The lower one third of the sides have a very simple series of vertical and horizontal lines.

The bowls glaze has crackle all over from age with some light stains– there is a ¾” chip on the rim that was replaced and badly glued in many years ago. Overall, the bowl is in good condition with signs of extensive usage. We date it to the 19th century just on the condition of the glaze and the general patina. It measures 6” diameter at the top and stands 3” high at the rim.
