This is a 20th century set of Kutani ware for serving sake – consisting of two tokkuri (sake bottles), one octagonal bowl with lovely floral design and five matched sake cups also with floral designs. The bowl was probably used to hold snacks such as a pile of edamame - a preparation of baby soybeans in the pod commonly found in Japan, China and Korea. A traditional custom of the Japanese is the belief that odd numbers can bring lucky so that sake cups come in a set of five. All of the items are in excellent condition – perhaps never used. The octagonal bowl measures 7” diameter by 3 ¼” high. The tokkuris measure 5” high - and the sake cups are 2” diameter at the top and are 1 ¼” high. We date the set to the mid 20th century, Showa period. There are marks on the base of each piece but the marks are different. Thanks to my good friend Edward Kawanabe of Sanai Fine Art and Antiques, he sent this translation: "Kutani sake cup translation. 1) round one translated as Tou" 2) octagonal cup mark translated as "Seiko" I checked this Kutani artist name in Japanese internet. I think his full name is "Horie Seiko" Last name is Horie, Seiko is first name."" |
