This is a large Japanese Kutani studio vase with an unusual glaze. The body of the vase is glazed in a dark brown glaze that is covered with small black spots done in a spattered pattern of overglaze enamels. There are three stylized cloud formations executed in overglaze enamels in several colors - gold, blue, light turquoise, green and red. The bottom of the vase is also glazed and has a painted signature in gold. My translation colleague advises that it is difficult to read since it is in script rather than kanji characters. His reading of the signature is a follows:"Kutani" (right two words-top to bottom)" illegible"(left two words. The vase measures 9 1/4" high and is 6 1/4" diameter at its widest. It is in excellent condition. We date it to any time between the late Meiji period to the early Showa period, circa 1910-1930s. |
