This is a beautiful Japanese studio vase dating from the late Meiji period, circa 1890-1910. The base glaze is a with mottled colors of a dark brown - shading into a near black - with splotches of tan and other colors. The vase is then decorated in a moriage style of thick slip forming a lovely group of colorful flowers on the shoulder and the top near the narrow neck. These are then repeated in a band of flowers near the foot. The base in glazed in the dark brown glaze while the base rim is unglazed showing the natural tan of the clay. The vase measures 5" high and is 3 3/8" at the shoulder. It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks or restorations. We date it to the late Meiji period. All in all, a wonderful addition to any collection of Japanese studio pottery. |
