A Fine Kinkozan Satsuma Kogo with Village Scene - Meiji
A very fine Satsuma kogo (covered box) with a lovely and intricate design of a village scene. In the upper left is a small group of villagers talking - bottom center and right shows a fishmonger with his wares surrounded by a group of women and their children. In a hut at upper right, two men are seated in front of a mat examining some item - or possibly playing some game.

As is typical of Kinkozan, the inside of the kogo is also beautifully painted on both the top and the bottom - a fine painting of a floral spray. The base has a four character mark that translates as "Kinkozan" - one of the finest of the Satsuma potteries. The kogo measures 3 3/4" diameter and is 1 1/4" thick. The kogo is in excellent condition - one tiny chip to the inside rim of the base - not seen when the kogo is closed - and hardly noticeable when the kogo is open. We date it to the Meiji period, circa 1875- 1890s. All in all, an excellent example of Meiji golden age Satsuma.
