| A small Japanese Satsuma tea bowl - chawan - with a body that is more white than the usual darker tan of Satsuma. Encircling the entire chawan on the outside is a fierce dragon with great detail to its scales, face, and claws. The inside of the piece is not decorated - there is no signature, but it clearly looks like the work of the Kinkozan potters. The chawan measures 3 1/4" diameter at the top - 1 1/4" diameter at the base - and stands 1 1/2" high. It is in good condition - one small chip to the upper rim and the gold at the rim is rubbed in some spots. We date it to the middle Meiji period, circa 1880s-1890s. | |||||||||||
