A nice early squared octagonal Arita dish with an overglaze enamel design of a deer standing under a maple tree in autumn and next to a running stream. The upper left corner of the dish has a design of geometric design separated from the main deer design. The shape of the dish is somewhat unusual in that is actually octagonal, but the main dimensions are square with the corners indented to make the octagonal shape. The underside of the dish has the usual underglaze blue karakusa vines design on the sides of the underside. The colors used for the top design are almost of the Kutani pallet, but we still believe the dish to be from the Arita area. The dish measures 5" diameter on the square sides - it is 1 1/4" deep at the rim. From the slight roughness of the clay, we date the piece to the late Edo period, circa 1750-1830s. It is in excellent condition with no chips or cracks. |
