A Superb Japanese Kogo - Makie Design of Six Creatures
This is a truly fabulous Japanese lacquer kogo (covered box) with a wonderful design of six of the creatures so beloved in Japanese art – the Dragon, the Shi Shi, the Kylin, the Tiger, the Elephant and the Baku. The different creatures are executed in makie - raised relief gold lacquer – on a ground of shiny dark black lacquer – called roiro. Most of the creatures have a tiny bit of red lacquer at the mouth – some have sprinkle or small designs of silver on the body – all have exquisite detail. (See the fine hairs on the tiger – or the highly detailed head of the elephant for examples). Five of the creatures are on the top lid of the kogo - the dragon surrounds the two parts of the kogo and totally encircles the piece. The interior of the two parts is plain gold lacquer and the base is plain black roiro lacquer.

The kogo measures 3 ½” diameter and is 1 1/8” thick at the highest part of the slightly domed lid. The kogo is in excellent condition overall. On one small spot of the edge of the upper lid, there is a Ύ” section of the dragon’s body that has been chipped at some point and expertly repaired with great care. We could not even notice the repair until we took the extreme close-up photos - see photo #10. The repair does not detract in any way from the beauty of the piece as it looks like part of the design. We date the piece to the late Edo period, circa 1800-1850s. It is a particularly magnificent example of the lacquerers art.
