This is a very fine Japanese red Kamakura-bori square covered box with rounded edges that sits on a square tray of the same lacquerware. Each piece has a design of multiple flower blossoms and their accompanying leaves and foliage. The design entirely covers the top of each piece and is executed in fine detail. The covered box measures 6 ½” square and is 3 5/8” high – it has a low foot. The base of the box is roiro black lacquer. The tray measures 10” square and is 1” high at the rim. The back is not decorated – just the beautiful red lacquer finish. Both pieces are in excellent condition – a bit of light rubbing on the bottom from usage – no cracks or chips. We date it to the set to the late Meiji period, circa 1885-1910. Kamakura-bori is a form of lacquerware from Kamakura, Japan. It is made by carving patterns in wood, then lacquering it with layers of red, blue, yellow or other colors. It is then polished. The genre is said to date to the Kamakura period, when Kōun (or, according to another theory, Kōen a busshi (a sculptor specializing in Buddhist images), began carving Buddhist implements in the manner that Chin Na-kei (or Chin Wa-kei) had introduced from Song Dynasty China. |
