A fine small Satsuma koro (incenser) decorated all over with hundreds of tiny butterflies or moths and three large butterflies. The design is in gold overlay enamel on the classic tan crackle glaze that is characteristic of Satsuma. It measures 4” high and is 4” diameter at the waist. It is in very good condition - at one time there must have been a small knob finial on the lid that was broken off. However, the missing finial has been expertly repaired with the same gold enamel used for the rest of the top and we had not even noticed the missing finial until we took the close up photos. There is a signature on the base – not translated. We date it to the late Meiji period, circa 1890-1910. |
