A Meiji Period Imari Ginger Jar - Meiji
This is a Japanese Imari faceted ginger jar from the early Meiji period, circa 1870s-1890s. It has hand-paddled facets that give it aesthetic interest above and beyond the traditional blue and red design all over the jar and its cover. The main body is decorated in floral designs – whilst the top and base have geometric bands. The band at the base is done in a very dark cobalt blue.

The facets on the jar are made by the potter using a flat wooden tool known as a potters paddle. After basic jar is thrown on the wheel, the potter uses the tool to make flattened surfaces such as the facets on this jar. The piece measures 6” high by 4 ½” diameter at its widest. It is in very good condition – the only problem area is some rim chips to the top of the jar that are covered when the jars cap is on the piece.
