This is a fine Japanese Kyoto Kiyomizu-yake plate by the artist known as Tosa, early Meiji period, circa 1870-1895. Tosa was a potter who lived in Gosjosaka and learned his art from the Rokubei Family. He follows typical Kiyomizu style and his work shows taste and originality. The plate has a lovely low relief design of white flowers (daisies ?) on a light chocolate brown ground. The base is glazed in the same medium brown and bears the impressed mark of Tosa inside a pentagonal frame. The plate measures 7 ¾” diameter and I” deep. One very unusual feature can be seen just outside and as part of the foot – there is a hole in the base foot. It would appear that this hole was made to enable the owner to hang the plate from a wall as decoration. We date this piece to approximately 1880-1895 - it is in excellent condition with no chips or restorations. |
