A Pair of Blue and White Imari Dishes - EDO
A fine matched pair of Japanese blue and white Imari dishes – each with a painting of the Three Friends of Winter in the center. In Japanese art, the pine tree, the bamboo, and the plum blossom (song zhú méi ) are admired for their perseverance under harsh conditions, and are together known as the "Three Friends of Winter". The "Three Friends" is traditionally used as a system of ranking in Japan, for example in sushi sets or accommodations at a traditional Ryokan (inn). Pine (matsu ) is of the first rank, bamboo (také ) is of second rank, and plum (ume) is of the third.

The three friends design is enclosed in a double blue line circle and the outer rim is decorated with three flowers connected by karakusa vines. The bases of the two dishes have simple blue circles and some stylized karakusa vines. The edges of the dishes have a slight scalloped edge. Each dish measures 7 ½” diameter by 1 1/3” deep. They both have the underglaze blue FUKU mark – meaning Good Fortune. There are three spur marks on each dish where tiny pyramids of clay held the pieces off the bottom of the kiln to make the firing even. On both of the dishes there is an old piece of paper that says “Blue and White Imari porcelain over 150 years ago and dated 1972. That would indicate that the dishes date from the early 18th century, Edo period, circa 1820s-1840s. They are both in excellent condition with no chips, cracks or restorations.
