This is a Japanese Imari covered bowl that measures 6” diameter by 3 ½” high and is in excellent condition. The top of the cover has a design of two phoenix birds (Ho-o) and two reserves with formal geometric designs. These are all tied together with a number of vines. The top finial is a plain white knob. The sides have blue and orange stylized floral designs. At the base, there are two cobalt blue circles enclosing a band of blue lappets that surround the foot. The base is a plain white glaze and the bottom rim shows the roughage to be expected with extensive usage. On the interior of the base of the bowl there are two small kanji characters in red – not translated. We date the piece to the late Edo to early Meiji period, circa 1850s-1880s/ |
