This is a sweet little round kogo (covered box) with a fine makie gold design of a woman seated on some rocks – with a group of large flowers to her left and overhead. There are areas of the design done in silver lacquer and the woman’s kimono has a number of small square pieces of different colored lacquer to enhance the beauty of the kimono. The design is in low relief and the rocks on which she sits flow down over the top of the lid and onto the bottom half of the kogo. The rocks are on the edge of a stream and one can see some bamboo leaves peeking out from behind the rocks. The interior and the base are executed in nashiji (pear skin) lacquer. The kogo measures 2 ¾ diameter and is ¾” deep. It is in excellent condition. We date it to the late Edo to early Meiji period, circa 1850 – 1870s. |
